What is DICOM?
DICOM – Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine. DICOM is a standard for creating, transmitting, processing and saving digital images and is mainly used in clinics. Its aim is to reduce time and costs and to increase efficiency.
What was the reason for creating a uniform DICOM standard?
The use of different digital image-processing systems (so-called modalities) of different manufacturers, e. g. MRTs, VistaScan etc., may cause problems. Every manufacturer uses another data format so that digital recordings of different systems cannot be saved in a database in a way that they can immediately be accessed for a determined patient. DICOM combines the file formats of different device and software manufacturers using a defined *.dcm format. Thus, different systems (modalities) of a clinic or medical surgery can interchange image data or communicate with each other if they have a DICOM interface (e. g. DICOM Starter by DBSWIN).
